How To Install Wall Anchors & Mounting Hooks?
Determine if there are wooden wall studs directly behind the anchor mounting marks.
You can do this with a stud finder purchased from a hardware store or by drilling a small pilot hole. If the drill bit hits wood, you've found a wall stud.
If it hits nothing and goes straight through, there is no stud, and you'll need to use a wall anchor/shield.
For walls with wooden studs directly behind the anchor points: Simply drill two small pilot holes into the wall at the anchor points and use the screws provided to hang your mirror.
For mounting areas without wood studs directly behind the anchor marks: You'll need to use wall anchors/shields to secure the screws to the wall. Drill a hole in the wall at each anchor mark and then push the wall anchor/shield into this hole. Now simply screw the mounting screws into the wall.
After installing your screws, place the wire on the back of the mirror frame onto your screws (leave screws extended approx. 1/8 inch from the wall) and step back to visually inspect the placement of your mirror.
How To Hang A Mirror On Wall?
Here's a step-by-step process on how to hang a mirror on wall:
- Evaluate The Wall And Location
Choose the location where you'd like to hang your mirror, taking into account the reflection that the mirror will cast from this spot. Hung opposite windows, the mirror will reflect light into a room.
You may also want to place your mirror where it reflects artwork or other beautifying pieces located in other parts of the room.
Pro Tip: Do not hang your mirror where it will reflect glare from the ceiling or hanging light fixtures
Generally, you'll want to hang your mirror at eye level, approximately 60”-65” from the floor.
Position the mirror on the wall where you want to hang it, centring it on the wall or on a piece of furniture beneath it (couch or console table).
- Draw An Outline
Now, draw the entire outline of the mirror on the wall with a pencil or erasable marker.
Pro Tip: Using a cardboard template of your mirror will make it much easier to draw your anchor points on the wall.
Find the center of the top and bottom lines and draw a vertical line connecting these two points.
Now, find the midpoint between the center line and the right side of the mirror and the center line and the left side of your mirror. Draw two more vertical lines connecting the top and bottom outline of your mirror to these points.
Now, measure approximately one-third down from the top of the mirror and make a mark on these lines. These will be the anchor points to use to hang your mirror.
- Use Right Hardware
Check the back of the mirror to see what hanging hardware it features. In case the hardware is worn down, old, or lacks quality, you can change to something newer, safer, and better.
It also depends on the wall you choose. If you have a stud for installation, the overall job will be more streamlined. Get a hook that can sustain the mirror's weight. Use a sturdy anchor as well.
- Decide How To Hang
Whether you're going to hang your mirror with a wire, French cheat, or D-ring depends upon what type of hardware you use.
Choose whatever works best for you, the type of wall you have, and the specific mirror you have picked.
Different types of mirrors, including their size, weight, and shape, require different hanging methods. However, always ask a friend or your partner to help you with the wall mirror installation.
How To Hang A Mirror Over Furniture Or Fireplace Mantel

When hanging a mirror over a sofa or furniture that is less than 30” tall, follow the instructions for placing the mirror at eye level (approx. 60”– 65” from the floor).
Mirrors placed above a dining room sideboard, server, or buffet console can be hung lower on a wall to account for the change in eye level when people are seated at a dining room table.
For taller pieces of furniture (cabinets, bookcases, etc.), the space between the bottom of the mirror and the top of your furniture should be approximately 4” – 8”. For taller furniture, leave a smaller gap in order to keep the mirror as close to eye level as possible.
When hanging a mirror above a fireplace mantel, leave a 4”- 6” gap between the bottom of the mirror and the top of the mantel, depending on the size of the frame and the shape of the mirror. When in doubt, always err on the side of hanging the mirror slightly lower on the wall.
How To Hang A Mirror Using D-Rings
Many mirror manufacturers feature D-rings situated on the back of their frames. One of the most common ways to hang a mirror on a wall.
D-rings offer the top-notch security for heavy items. The D-ring connects with the wall hooks where your heavy mirror will easily snug to the wall.
Just make sure the rings are equally positioned from the top edge. You need to measure down from the edge at the top to each D-ring to see whether the distance matches.
Now, match all these wall marks to detect any varying dimensions. You need to ensure that the D-rings are at an equal distance from the top edge of the frame because if they are not, then the marks will not be level.
Find the Right Height
Decide where you want the mirror. Use a pencil to mark the center point on the wall. From there, measure up 57 inches from the floor. Add half the height of your mirror to this number to find out where the top edge of the mirror should be. Mark this spot with a pencil.
Mark the D-Rings
Check the back of your mirror to see where the D-rings are located. Measure from the top edge of the mirror down to the highest point of one D-ring.Use this measurement to mark the same distance down from your center line on the wall. You can use a pencil or painter's tape for this.
Measure D-Ring Distance
Create a pattern for the D-rings using a level. Lay the mirror face down on a flat surface and place the level against the top of each D-ring. Mark the distance between them on the level or use some painter's tape.
Draw a Level Line
Place your level against the wall, lining it up with your center point. Transfer your marks from the level to the wall where you'll put the screws.
Prepare for Installation
If you're not drilling into studs, make pilot holes first. Use wall anchors that suit your wall type and the weight of your mirror. Install screws into the anchors or attach hangers to the wall.
Hang the Mirror
Carefully hang the mirror on the screws or hooks. You may need someone to help you. Mirrors can be heavy, and it's easier to align the D-rings properly with help.
How to Hang a Mirror with a French Cleat
Choose the Right Cleat
Select a French cleat that can hold the weight of your mirror. Follow the instructions to attach the top plate to the back of your mirror frame. Make sure it's centered and level, with the lip of the cleat facing down.
Mark the Center Point
Decide where to hang the mirror and mark the center point on the wall.
Measure Cleat Height
Measure from the top of your mirror frame to the bottom of the cleat. Use this measurement to mark where it will go on the wall, measuring down from your center point. Draw a horizontal line about 6 inches long along this point.
Install the Wall Cleat
Hold the wall cleat against the line you drew. It should be aligned with the top edge, and the lip should face the ceiling. Drill pilot holes and install anchors if needed. Then, securely screw in the cleat.
Hang the Mirror
Slide the mirror frame down a bit until the cleats lock into place.
How To Install A Mirror Using Wire
One of the most popular options to hang a mirror is using a picture wire. Make sure you are choosing the right gauge if you are using wire to hang a heavy mirror. You can check the gauge listed on the package. Just ensure it is strong enough to handle the weight.
If there are D-rings at the back of the mirror, then make sure you twist the wire securely enough through them.
First, you have to plan to set two hangers on the wall so they can properly distribute the weight.
Deciding The Placement And Measurements
Once you've figured out the placement of the mirror, use a pencil to mark its center point. Then, measure up to 57 inches from the floor and add half the height of the mirror. Again, mark that measurement. This is the top edge of your mirror.
Take the help of someone to hold the mirror by wire distributing the weight evenly on both sides. Measure the distance from the top edge of the mirror frame to the wire. Also, measure the distance between the two hands of the person who is holding the mirror.
Mark the Measurements & Leveling
Now, you need to transfer the measurements to the wall. For that, you need to measure down from the top-edge reference mark. Level the two marks where earlier were the holder's hands. Put an "X" at each spot to drill screw placements. Drill pilot holes if you are not securing into studs.
Install Screws And Hang The Mirror
Finally, install the screws into the fitted anchors or the hangers fixed on the wall. In the end, now you can finally hang the mirror. Make sure it is the right level.
